For over 20 years the Joseph Furphy Literary Awards have celebrated writing in the Goulburn Valley region surrounding Shepparton.  In 2020 the awards have been re-invigorated with a significant increase in prize money and have been re-badged the Furphy Literary Award.  The Junior and Youth categories remain restricted to those in the regions around Shepparton but the open category is now an national award and asks for short stories (5000 words or less) with the theme of “Australian Life”.
